On November 20, 2022, over 60,00 people flocked to the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar for the very first match in the FIFA World Cup 2022. The FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious soccer tournament in the world. It was first held in Uruguay in 1930 by FIFA president Jules Rimet. The World Cup is now held every four years.
This World Cup was Qatar's first year hosting and also the first time a middle eastern country has hosted. In preparation, they spent over 200 Billion USD on buildings, organization, and more, so this year’s tournament is sure to not disappoint.
Format:
The tournament starts off with 32 teams which are divided into 8 groups (Which are named groups A-H) of 4 teams. These groups will first play a round robin and the 2 winning teams of every group will proceed to the round of 16. From there on, the 16 remaining teams will play in a traditional bracket. So far, the teams that made it to the round of 16 are Netherlands, Senegal, England, USA, France, Australia, Argentina, Poland, Morocco, Croatia, Japan, Spain, Brazil, Switzerland, South Korea and Portugal.
This year’s world cup is also a very special world cup. This World Cup is the last for many famous soccer players such as Ronaldo and Messi, who are widely considered as two of the best soccer players to ever exist. Another very inspiring moment is that Asia took a giant step forward this year. Both Japan and South Korea made it to the round of 16, defeating previous World Cup champions. It was absolutely phenomenal how both Japan and South Korea both came back from a goal down and defeated their opponents.
