Election Day, held on November 5th, 2024, is a foundation of democracy in the United States, when citizens across the nation go to polling locations to vote for candidates and policies at the local, state, and federal levels. It represents an opportunity for individuals to have a direct say in shaping the future of their communities and the country.
On November 5th, 2024, Wilson Wims Elementary School was a bustling local polling location, reflecting the high stakes of Election Day. Outside the school, volunteers distributed flyers, including sample ballots, to voters as they arrived. The area was filled with signs and posters featuring Democratic Party candidates and messages, creating a vibrant display of political engagement.
Jay Guan, one of the volunteers, highlighted abortion as a central topic in this election, framing it as an example of "single-issue politics." Single-issue politics are when voters focus on one policy—such as abortion—above all others, shaping their support for candidates based on their stance on that specific issue. Guan stressed that the state-level control of abortion laws has amplified its significance, turning it into a decisive factor for many voters this year. The strong turnout and active discussions at Wilson Wims Elementary School reflected the weight of such issues, as citizens exercise their democratic right to influence policies impacting their lives.
